It's not so much knack as persistence. :D @Abraham - I don't think the burrowing owls tend to stray east of the Mississippi river. At least not according to the <a href="http://www.owlpages.com/owls.php?genus=Athene&species=cunicularia" rel="nofollow">Owl Pages</a>. They favor open, dry grasslands and shrubby areas.
